“Experimentation with materials and processes captivates Caiti Chan.”
She carefully pours and drips paint, but also relinquishes control so that serendipitous effects of chance also occur. Her large all-over compositions are thus studies in tension—between what is willed and what emerges, and in surface and atmospheric depth. Chan develops a working rhythm that she sustains until arriving at the natural conclusion of a painting. She credits her heightened use of “eye-grabbing color” in recent works to a growing confidence that extends to the complexity of her surface textures, typically achieved by manipulating her painterly media with salt, isopropyl alcohol, and other strategies.
